A DAY IN THE LIFE OF AN OLOGY BOOKER

9.00am. I get to the office, and I’m usually greeted with a nice big coffee, and an even bigger to-do list! I spend a few minutes catching up with whoever is in the office, finding out where different jobs, casting and projects are at, before cracking on with the emails.

We try to keep the inbox as clear as possible during the day, to make sure we are on top of everything. This means the morning is super busy, working through anything that came through overnight, including self-tapes and briefs.

Once I’ve replied to everything I need to, I will start on the briefs. Some days there will be as many as 10 big jobs to submit for as soon as I sit down, and many more coming in throughout the day. These are the days it’s important to keep lots of organised lists and keep the coffee topped up!

As briefs come in, I have to make lots of decisions. For jobs that are fairly local, I have to look through the books and decide who fits the brief best, put together casting cards, Supernovas and information ready to send off on an email.

Those that are in London, or require something specific take a little more time. After shortlisting the children I’d like to submit, I will usually send a text to parents to check availability if the children are based in the North.

Whilst I’m waiting to hear back from texts, I will catch up on admin (such as booking forms and licences, etc), or make phone calls. I really like calling parents and telling them about exciting castings, or (even better!) that they have landed a great job! It’s especially exciting when you were the booker who submitted the child for the job, talked them up to the Casting Directors and then they did the hard work of bagging the job!

Although the office is always super busy, it’s a lot of fun. We listen to music (although Andrew and I are big fans of Podcasts and comedy), eat (healthy!) brownies and test each other on our knowledge of the children (parents names, email addresses, last job!) so we’re at the top of our game.

It always seems as though the biggest jobs sneak into the inbox right near the end of the day. We spend the last part of the day frantically calling parents, sweet talking LEAs to get licences turned around last minute, and negotiating shoot terms with clients.

Somehow, I also have to squeeze into the day: database updating, blog post writing, photo uploading, Supernova booking, question answering and paperwork organising. Phew!

By the end of the day, I need one last mug of coffee before it’s home for a well earned break and then ready to start again tomorrow!
